About
Joep Beving makes the kind of piano music that sneaks up on you. His compositions sit somewhere between minimalism and atmosphere, and he describes them himself as "accessible music for complex emotions". He spent years working in advertising, writing music for commercials and short films, before a fan passed his work along to Deutsche Grammophon, who signed him despite their classical music focus raising some eyebrows about where exactly his sound fits in. His 2015 debut Solipsism set the tone, and he followed it with Prehension, Conatus and Henosis. He draws comparisons to Steve Reich and Philip Glass but insists on his own path, stripping away ornamentation while arriving somewhere distinctly his own. In 2021 he scored the film Mijn vader is een vliegtuig, and he has a clear preference for playing on Schimmel pianos.
