Ólafur Arnalds started out drumming in hardcore punk and metal bands, which makes his current sound all the more striking. The Icelandic multi instrumentalist and producer weaves strings and piano together with loops, beats and electronic textures, landing somewhere between ambient, modern classical and atmospheric pop. His score for the ITV series Broadchurch earned him the 2014 BAFTA TV Craft Award for Best Original Music, and his fifth studio album Some Kind of Peace pulled two Grammy nominations, including one for the Bonobo collaboration "Loom". He also runs the experimental techno project Kiasmos with Janus Rasmussen of Bloodgroup, and his work spans film scores, ballet and TV themes, among them the Apple TV+ series Defending Jacob, which landed him an Emmy nomination in 2020. His catalogue keeps stretching in interesting directions, from the intimate Living Room Songs recorded in his Reykjavik apartment to the album It's 2 a.m. and I'm not tired in 2023 and A Dawning in 2025.
