Jason Becker was already turning heads as a teenager when he teamed up with Marty Friedman to form Cacophony, the Shrapnel Records duo that put out Speed Metal Symphony and Go Off! before splitting in 1989. His neoclassical shredding, deeply influenced by Paganini, earned him a spot in David Lee Roth's band, where he replaced Steve Vai and contributed to A Little Ain't Enough. Then in 1990 came a diagnosis of ALS that would take away his ability to play, walk, and eventually speak. What makes Becker's story genuinely remarkable is what came after. Communicating through an eye movement system his father designed, he kept composing, releasing Perspective in 1996, Collection in 2008, and the crowdfunded Triumphant Hearts in 2018, the latter featuring an all star cast including Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and Marty Friedman. In 2024 he put out Some Assembly Required with a group of friends, proof that the music has not stopped.
