About
Jason Moran is one of those rare jazz pianists who genuinely refuses to stay in one lane. Based in New York after coming up in Houston, he pulls from post bop, stride piano, blues, classical music, and hip hop in a way that feels completely natural rather than forced. His trio The Bandwagon, with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, became one of the more compelling units in contemporary jazz, and their 2001 album Black Stars landed on NPR's list of the fifty most important recordings of the decade. Beyond the records, Moran has pushed into multimedia territory with theatrical installations and commissioned museum pieces. His project IN MY MIND, built around Thelonious Monk's 1959 Town Hall concert, mixed archival footage, video art, and live performance in a way the New York Times called a magical balance of theory and intuition. He has also played alongside Charles Lloyd and toured with Dave Holland's Overtone Quartet, proving himself a serious collaborator as well as a bandleader.
