Ambrose Akinmusire has spent years expanding what a jazz trumpet can do, and the results speak for themselves. The Oakland native swept two of the most prestigious jazz competitions in 2007, the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition, and landed on Blue Note Records shortly after. His 2011 Blue Note debut, When the Heart Emerges Glistening, introduced a quintet that would evolve into one of the most consistent working bands in contemporary jazz, with bassist Harish Raghavan and drummer Justin Brown sticking around through his Grammy nominated 2020 album On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment. His reach extends well beyond the jazz world. He appears on the closing track of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, and his 2018 album Origami Harvest landed on the New York Times best jazz list. DownBeat's critics named him Jazz Artist of the Year in 2011 and voted him top trumpeter every year from 2013 to 2020. His album Honey from a Winter Stone picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Jazz Album, showing he keeps pushing the music into new territory.
