About
Jay Black had a voice that could stop a room, which is exactly what happened when he auditioned for Jay and the Americans by belting out "Cara Mia" at a founding member's parents' house. He became the second and most famous frontman the group ever had, guiding them through a string of 1960s hits including "Come a Little Bit Closer" and "This Magic Moment". Before all that, he'd been cutting his teeth in the doo wop group The Empires. After the Americans split in 1973, Black kept the show going under various versions of the name, eventually settling on "Jay Black The Voice" after a legal battle forced him to sell the rights to the "Jay and the Americans" trademark. He was still performing well into his seventies, mixing comedy routines with his signature songs. Younger audiences may know his work without realising it: "Come a Little Bit Closer" appeared on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack, which went gold in the US and sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide.
