About
Jaya has a claim few Filipino singers can match: her debut single, "If You Leave Me Now", climbed to number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stuck around for 26 weeks, which is a long run for a song that never cracked the top 40. That made her only the second Filipino recording artist to chart in the United States. Her freestyle dance tracks, produced by Stevie B, did well in clubs and crossover radio, but it was back in the Philippines that her career really took off. Signing with Viva Records in 1995 changed everything. Her 1996 Philippine debut sold nine times platinum, a record for a female artist there, and her deep, soulful voice earned her the title "Queen of Soul". She won the 1996 Metropop Song Festival with "Sometimes You Just Know" and took Best Interpreter at the Asia Song Festival in Hong Kong. She has also released a Christmas album, appeared in musical theatre, and become a familiar face on Philippine TV.
