About
Jeangu Macrooy makes modern soul pop that draws on his Surinamese roots and Dutch upbringing, and his voice is the kind that stops a room. He broke through in the Netherlands with his debut EP Brave Enough and first album High on You, both produced with Perquisite, and his single "High on You" went all the way to number one on the Surinamese Top 40. He represented the Netherlands at Eurovision 2021 with "Birth of a New Age", a song that made history as the first Eurovision entry to feature lyrics in Sranan Tongo. His third album Summer Moon brought electronic and disco textures alongside the soulful sound he built his name on, and his fourth record Young, Awkward & Lonely, produced by Jasper Zuidervaart, followed a satirical queer protest single that earned him a TopSong on NPO Radio 2. Beyond music, he played Jesus in a celebrated run of Jesus Christ Superstar and later took on the role of Orpheus in Hadestown at the Royal theatre Carré in Amsterdam.
