Jeff Wayne's name is inseparable from one of the most ambitious rock operas ever made. His 1978 double album adaptation of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds sold around 13 million copies worldwide and was the 40th best selling album of all time in the UK by 2009. Richard Burton narrated throughout, Justin Hayward sang the hit singles The Eve of the War and Forever Autumn, and the whole thing won two Ivor Novello Awards, with judges that included Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Alfred Hitchcock. Wayne followed it up in 1992 with a Musical Version of Spartacus, featuring Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta Jones and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He has also scored TV themes, films and hundreds of advertising jingles, and later brought The War of the Worlds to arena stages with a live show combining a full orchestra, animatronics and high definition projection.
