Jenny Lewis spent her teens in front of cameras as a child actress, but by the late 1990s she had quietly pivoted to music, co founding the indie rock band Rilo Kiley in 1998. The band built a devoted following through their 2004 album More Adventurous, with Pitchfork crediting the decision to put Lewis's voice front and center as the key to its success. A retrospective in 2016 called her a style icon and "microgenerational sad girl touchstone" for a generation of music loving young women. Beyond Rilo Kiley, Lewis has carved out a serious solo career across five albums, starting with Rabbit Fur Coat in 2006, recorded with The Watson Twins and featuring guests like Conor Oberst and Ben Gibbard. Each record has its own character: Acid Tongue, The Voyager, On the Line, and Joy'All all show her moving through different emotional territory. She has also been part of The Postal Service, Jenny & Johnny, and Nice as Fuck, proving she is never content to stay in one lane.
