Few Finnish bands blur the line between psychedelic rock and occult doom quite like Jess and the Ancient Ones. Formed in Kuopio in 2010, several members came from the Finnish metal act Deathchain, and that heavy background seeps through their hazy, organ driven sound. Their self titled debut landed in 2012, followed by Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes in 2015, The Horse and Other Weird Tales in 2017, and Vertigo in 2021. Along the way they dropped the Astral Sabbat EP, produced by Tore Stjerna of Necromorbus Studio, and split a 7 inch with Spain's Deadmask. The band has seen some notable lineup shifts in recent years. Long time vocalist Jasmin "Jess" Saarela, who fronted the group from the start, departed in 2025, with Laura Vespini stepping in as the new voice. The core rhythm section and guitar lineup have stayed largely intact, keeping the band's trademark blend of vintage psychedelia and heavy riffing firmly in place.
