Jhené Aiko built something genuinely singular in R&B, blending contemporary soul with neo soul and trap into a sound that feels both intimate and expansive. She first appeared in the early 2000s as a backing vocalist for B2K, then stepped away from music entirely before coming back on her own terms with the 2011 mixtape Sailing Soul(s), which featured collaborations with Drake, Kanye West, and Miguel. Her debut EP Sail Out introduced the quintuple platinum certified track 'The Worst', and from there the momentum only grew. Her three studio albums, Souled Out, Trip, and Chilombo, each landed well critically and commercially. Chilombo was the peak so far, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200 and earning three Grammy nominations including Album of the Year. She also released a collaborative album with Big Sean under the name Twenty88. Her guest spot on Big Sean's 'Beware' alongside Lil Wayne marked her first Billboard Hot 100 entry, cracking the top 40 and putting her name firmly on the map.
