Few bands from the Arizona suburbs have left as deep a mark on alternative rock as Jimmy Eat World. The Mesa quartet, built around vocalist and guitarist Jim Adkins, guitarist Tom Linton, bassist Rick Burch, and drummer Zach Lind, hit their stride with Bleed American in 2001. That record produced four top 20 Alternative Songs chart hits, with 'The Middle' going all the way to number one and reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100. The RIAA certified the album platinum, and it remains the defining document of their sound: precise, hook driven pop rock with real emotional weight. Their follow up Futures delivered another number one Alternative Songs hit with 'Pain', went gold, and Chase This Light pushed even further into the mainstream, peaking at number five on the Billboard 200. The album Clarity, which came before all of that, quietly built a devoted cult following over the years. Ten studio albums in, including Surviving in 2019, Jimmy Eat World have stayed remarkably consistent without ever sounding like they are coasting.
