Jlin makes the kind of footwork rooted electronic music that ends up scoring fashion shows and ballet premieres in the same breath. The Gary, Indiana producer first turned heads with her 2011 track 'Erotic Heat', which she had almost kept to herself because it felt too strange for a conventional footwork release. It landed on Planet Mu's Bangs and Works Vol. 2 compilation and was later used at a Rick Owens runway show. Her 2015 debut Dark Energy helped push footwork far beyond Chicago, and 2017's Black Origami, with contributions from Holly Herndon and William Basinski among others, was widely listed as one of the best albums of that year. Since then her work has stretched well past club music. She composed the score for choreographer Wayne McGregor's Autobiography, premiered at Sadler's Wells, and her composition Perspective made her a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2023. Her third album Akoma, out in 2024, features collaborations with Björk, Philip Glass, and Kronos Quartet, which says a lot about the kind of territory she now moves through.
