Few bands have a founding story quite like Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Joan Jett literally placed an ad in the LA Weekly looking for "three good men", assembled a lineup rooted in the Los Angeles punk scene, and built the band from scratch after her solo debut was rejected by 23 major labels. She and producer Kenny Laguna pressed copies of that album themselves and at times sold them out of the trunk of a Cadillac after shows. The hustle paid off: their cover of "I Love Rock 'n Roll" sat at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks straight in 1982, and the track has since been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Over the years the band racked up platinum and gold certifications, packed arenas on tours alongside Queen, the Police, and Aerosmith, and made history as the first rock band to perform a series of shows at the Lunt Fontanne Theatre on Broadway. Jett and Laguna remain the only constants through countless lineup changes, and in 2015 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
