Few artists blur the line between folk and orchestral music quite like Joanna Newsom. The Nevada City harpist and singer songwriter built a devoted underground following with her 2004 debut The Milk Eyed Mender, which NME later named the 12th best folk album of all time. Her second album Ys took things to a different level entirely, featuring orchestrations by Van Dyke Parks, engineering from Steve Albini, and mixing by Jim O'Rourke. It charted on the Billboard 200 and earned a Shortlist Music Prize nomination, bringing her music to a much wider audience. Her third record, Have One on Me, was a sprawling triple album recorded in Tokyo, clocking in at over two hours of music and winning praise from critics for its sheer variety. Divers followed in 2015, cementing her reputation as one of the more singular voices in progressive and chamber folk. Beyond music, she has shown up on screen too, with a role in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2014 film Inherent Vice and appearances in the TV series Portlandia.
