About
Joe Hicks is a San Francisco soul and R&B singer whose biggest claim to fame might be the company he kept. In 1969 he cut "I'm Goin' Home" backed by the Family Stone's own rhythm and horn section, with Sly Stone writing and producing it for his Stone Flower label. It also came out on Scepter. A year earlier, "Don't It Make You Feel Funky" had landed on AGC Records and later turned up on the Northern Soul compilation A Treasure Chest of Northern Soul. Hicks was a songwriter too, and a handy one. He co wrote "Sound of the City" and "I Know Something Good About You" with Delaney Bramlett, both of which ended up on Delaney & Bonnie & Friends' 1972 album D&B Together. With Bobby Womack he wrote "Simple Man" and "Ruby Dean", plus the hit "That's The Way I Feel About Cha". In 1973 he released the album Mighty Joe Hicks on Enterprise, a Stax subsidiary. His Stone Flower tracks were revisited on a 2014 reissue collection.
