Joe Smooth's "Promised Land" is one of those records that defines a genre. Originally released in 1987 and featuring vocalist Anthony Thomas, the track became a worldwide house classic, peaked at No. 56 in the UK Singles Chart in 1989, and still gets played today. Its message of unity and love gave it a timeless quality that few dance records ever achieve. He was also co producer on Chip E's "Jack Trax" EP, a foundational moment in Chicago house, and Daft Punk were among the acts who regularly spun his music during their early live shows. Beyond his own releases, Joe Smooth spent much of his career working quietly but effectively behind the scenes, racking up gold and platinum credits alongside artists like Whitney Houston, Destiny's Child, New Order, and Frankie Knuckles. His 2015 label Indie Art Music later merged with the Atlantic Traxx Group in 2023 to form IAM TRAXX, keeping his focus on quality dance and electronic music. He also works under the alias Smooth Angel alongside Mike Angel.
