About
Marshall Jefferson has a pretty strong claim to the title of father of house music, and it all traces back to one record. His 1986 Trax Records single "Move Your Body" was the first house track to feature piano, and it hit hard on both sides of the Atlantic, introducing a huge audience in the UK to the genre. His sound was deep and melodic, built on heavy piano riffs and sweeping string arrangements, and that approach helped lay the groundwork for deep house as a distinct style. Through the late 1980s he worked under aliases like Virgo, Jungle Wonz, and On the House, while producing for CeCe Rogers, Sterling Void, and Ten City. "Move Your Body" has had a long afterlife too, turning up in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the film 24 Hour Party People, and the 1991 documentary Paris Is Burning. Now based in Manchester, he released a reworked version of that track with Mancunian duo Solardo in 2019, and in 2021 reunited with Byron Stingily for a new Ten City single called "Be Free".
