Few DJs can claim they helped invent a genre, but Armand van Helden is one of them. His mid 1990s remixes of Tori Amos's "Professional Widow", C.J. Bolland's "Sugar Is Sweeter" and Sneaker Pimps' "Spin Spin Sugar" were pivotal in shaping speed garage, a sound that rewired UK dance floors for years. Working out of New York and drawing heavily on funk, soul, R&B and hip hop samples alongside dub progressions and dancehall flavours, he built a reputation as one of house music's most inventive remixers. His own records hit just as hard. "You Don't Know Me" went to number one in the UK and cracked the top 20 in Australia and Canada, while "My My My" featuring Tara McDonald and "Bonkers" with Dizzee Rascal both topped the UK Dance Chart. Then in 2009 he teamed up with A Trak to form Duck Sauce, and their track "Barbra Streisand" topped charts in 12 countries and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording. He has kept remixing steadily ever since, with artists ranging from Daft Punk and Katy Perry to Sam Smith and Bloc Party.
