About
Also known as: John Mc Laughlin, Mahavishnu John McLaughlin
John McLaughlin is the guitarist who helped invent jazz fusion, and he did it by refusing to pick a lane. Jazz, rock, flamenco, blues, Indian classical and Western classical all end up in his playing. After making his debut album Extrapolation in 1969, he joined Tony Williams' Lifetime and then played on Miles Davis albums like In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew and On the Corner. In the 70s came the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a band known for blisteringly technical, complex music, and Shakti, a jazz and Indian fusion group he co founded with violinist L. Shankar and percussionists Zakir Hussain and Vikku Vinayakram. The recognition has piled up over the years. His solo on Miles Beyond from Live at Ronnie Scott's won the 2018 Grammy for Best Improvised Jazz Solo, and Rolling Stone ranked him 49th on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists. Jeff Beck once called him the best guitarist alive, and Pat Metheny has said much the same. Berklee gave him an honorary doctorate of music in 2017.
