Few guitarists in rock have shaped a genre as thoroughly as John Petrucci has with progressive metal. As a founding member of Dream Theater, he has been the band's most consistent creative force, producing every album since Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory in 1999 and taking over as sole producer from A Dramatic Turn of Events in 2011. His playing is instantly recognizable: blistering alternate picking, fluid seven string riffing, and a knack for weaving in slower, more emotional passages that keep even the most complex compositions from feeling cold. Outside Dream Theater, Petrucci has been part of Liquid Tension Experiment and made multiple appearances on the G3 guitar tour alongside Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Paul Gilbert. He has two solo albums to his name, Suspended Animation from 2005 and Terminal Velocity from 2020, the latter reuniting him with former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy. He is also Dream Theater's most prolific lyricist and has served as a baritone backing vocalist since the Awake Tour.
