About
Best known as the powerhouse behind neoclassical metal outfit Artension, John West has spent decades navigating the upper reaches of hard rock and progressive metal. He joined Artension in 1996, and their second album Phoenix Rising stands out as a showcase for just how wide his vocal range can go. Two years later he stepped in as lead singer for Royal Hunt, where he ended up staying for nearly a decade, longer than any other vocalist in the band's history up to that point. West's solo records are genuinely varied. His first two leaned hard into neoclassical metal with long instrumental stretches, while Earth Maker shifted toward tighter songwriting, and Long Time No Sing took a turn into blues rock territory where he also picked up the guitar. Outside his own name, he has lent his voice to projects ranging from Emir Hot's Sevdah Metal to symphonic metal band Mythodea, and he teamed up with former Artension guitarist Roger Staffelbach for the band Artlantica.
