About

Also known as: Rav Tzizit

John Zorn is the kind of musician who makes genre labels look ridiculous. The Queens born saxophonist, composer and producer pulls from jazz, klezmer, hardcore, surf, metal, film scores and contemporary classical, often within the same record, and somehow makes it cohere. Rolling Stone called him one of the most influential musicians of our time, even though he has spent his career almost entirely outside the mainstream. His 1986 rework of Ennio Morricone themes, The Big Gundown, earned him serious critical attention, and Morricone himself praised it as work done by a maestro. Spillane followed in 1987, then the abrasive, shape shifting band Naked City, and from 1994 onward the sprawling Masada project, which generated over three hundred compositions drawing on Jewish musical traditions. All of it has come out on his own Tzadik Records since 1995, giving him complete control over an output that is genuinely staggering in both volume and range.
