Johnny Jewel runs on analog. The Houston born musician, producer, and composer built his entire sonic world around all analog equipment, a commitment that shapes the dreamy, slow motion atmosphere running through everything he touches. He founded Glass Candy with vocalist Ida No in Portland in 1996, starting out with a no wave edge before pivoting to a sleek Italo disco sound. That same instinct for atmosphere led him to launch the Portland label Italians Do It Better in 2006, home to Glass Candy, Chromatics, and Desire, acts he wrote, recorded, and performed with directly. His work with Chromatics brought him serious crossover attention, especially after their music appeared in Nicolas Winding Refn's film Drive in 2011. Jewel had already scored Refn's Bronson in 2008, and later handled the score for Ryan Gosling's directorial debut Lost River in 2015. Between 2014 and 2018 he also put out three solo albums, mostly instrumental, that sit comfortably in the same cool, synth soaked space as everything else on his label.
