Son of hockey legend Patrick Roy, Jonathan Roy took a sharp left turn from the crease to the studio, and it paid off. Based in Toronto, the Canadian pop singer and songwriter has built a catalog of five albums, with his major label debut Mr. Optimist Blues landing at number three in Canada in 2017. That record came together through an unlikely partnership with 1980s pop figure Corey Hart, who executive produced it and contributed three songs. The Montreal Gazette summed up the sound as easygoing 21st century pop with a touch of light reggae, somewhere between Ed Sheeran and Paolo Nutini with a hint of Bob Marley. Roy has a knack for finding great collaborators. He frequently works with vocalist Kim Richardson, and in 2023 he joined an all star cast on Serena Ryder's single What I Wouldn't Do, raising funds for youth mental health. His recent YouTube output includes acoustic performances and covers, among them a version of Chris Stapleton's Cold with Kim Richardson, showing off a warm, stripped back side to his sound.
