Joyce Moreno has been writing songs with a distinctly feminine, first person voice since the late 1960s, and that approach turned out to be quietly radical in Brazil at the time. Her guitar playing is just as central to her identity as her singing, and over a career spanning more than five decades she has written close to 400 songs, many of them recorded by heavyweights like Elis Regina, Maria Bethânia, Milton Nascimento and Gal Costa. Foreign artists have picked up her work too, including Annie Lennox and the Black Eyed Peas, and two of her compositions ended up in Hollywood films: Robert Altman's The Player and Legally Blonde. Her 1980 album Feminina was a commercial and cultural breakthrough in Brazil, and in the 1990s London DJs pulled her back into the international spotlight through the acid jazz scene. Four Latin Grammy nominations followed, spanning 2000 to 2010, across categories from Best Brazilian Music CD to Best Song in the Portuguese Language. She is also a journalist, author and television documentary maker, so the music is really just one part of a much bigger picture.
