Formed in Pucallpa in 1966, Juaneco y su Combo became one of the most distinctive acts in the Peruvian cumbia scene by pioneering what is known as jungle cumbia, a style rooted in the Amazon region. The band dressed the part too, performing in parrot feather headgear and cotton tunics inspired by the Shipibo people of Peru, giving their live shows a visual identity as striking as the music itself. Founded by amateur saxophonist Juan Wong Paredes, the group hit its creative peak in the early 1970s before tragedy struck in 1977, when five members died in a plane crash. Their legacy has endured well beyond that loss, with reissues like Masters of Chicha Vol. 1 and the definitive collection Legado introducing their sound to new generations of listeners around the world.
