Judith Koch has built a show around one of pop history's most beloved and tragic figures: Karen Carpenter. Together with her band, she performs a carefully chosen mix of Carpenters hits and lesser known gems, songs like Close to You, We've Only Just Begun and Top of the World, weaving live music together with personal anecdotes about Karen and Richard Carpenter. The result is something more than a tribute set. Koch also tells Karen's story, including the pressures of family expectations, fame and public scrutiny that shaped her life and ultimately contributed to her death from anorexia at just 32. The show works because Koch's voice genuinely holds up to the comparison. Close your eyes while she sings and the resemblance to Karen Carpenter's warm, distinctive tone is striking. The atmosphere is intimate rather than theatrical, built around careful listening and the kind of storytelling that makes the music feel immediate rather than nostalgic.
