About
Also known as: Julia Shammas Holter
Julia Holter makes the kind of music that resists easy categorisation, pulling together art pop, chamber arrangements, ambient textures and avant garde composition into something that feels entirely her own. Based in Los Angeles, she built a reputation through a string of critically lauded albums, starting with Tragedy in 2011, an album rooted in Euripides' Hippolytus, and then Ekstasis in 2012, which drew comparisons to Kate Bush, Joanna Newsom and Stereolab. Her third album, Loud City Song, marked a shift from bedroom recordings to full ensemble work and was universally praised. Have You in My Wilderness became her most commercially successful record, while the double album Aviary in 2018 earned her wide respect for its sheer ambition and scope. She also composed the film score for Never Rarely Sometimes Always in 2020. Her 2024 album Something in the Room She Moves continued to draw critical acclaim, and a companion album, Materia, followed in 2026. She has collaborated with Jean Michel Jarre, Ariel Pink, Laurel Halo and Linda Perhacs, among others.
