Julian Pollack, who records and performs as J3PO, sits at a genuinely unusual crossroads: classically trained pianist turned jazz trio leader turned synth obsessive and hip hop collaborator. His trio albums, including Infinite Playground and Waves of Albion, blend jazz improvisation with indie rock and folk references, slipping in arrangements of Bon Iver and Death Cab for Cutie alongside standard repertoire. That restless genre hopping eventually pulled him deep into electronic territory, and by 2019 his album Small Plates was mixing lo fi beats with jazztronica and future house. On the synthesis side, Pollack has become a go to sound designer, creating patch libraries for Clavia Nord, Sequential's Prophet 5 reissue, and the Softube Model 84. He also spent time touring with Marcus Miller, holding down keys on residencies in Tokyo and across the US and Europe. His 2021 full length MAINS, released on Ropeadope Records, is the most recent statement from an artist who clearly refuses to stay in one lane.
