About

Julian Steckel is one of those cellists who can move between a Baroque concerto and late Romantic repertoire without missing a beat. The Pirmasens born musician made a serious mark when he won the ARD International Music Competition in 2010, and two years later picked up the Echo Klassik for Young Artist of the Year on the strength of his recording of cello concertos by Korngold, Bloch, and Goldschmidt. That album, released on Cavi Music under conductor Daniel Raiskin, put him firmly on the map as a soloist with real depth and range. His discography spans French cello sonatas, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and CPE Bach concertos with the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, often alongside pianist Paul Rivinius. Away from the concert hall, Steckel has built a parallel career in education, holding a cello professorship first at the Rostock University of Music and Theatre and then, from 2017 onward, at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.
