Juliana Hatfield built her reputation through a run of sharp, guitar driven indie rock that hit its peak with Become What You Are in 1993. That record, made with her band the Juliana Hatfield Three, gave her two of her most recognisable songs: "My Sister" and "Spin the Bottle", the latter landing on the Reality Bites soundtrack and helping put her on the cover of Spin magazine. Before that, she had already been deep in the Boston indie scene as a founding member of Blake Babies and a brief but notable stint as bassist for the Lemonheads, playing on It's a Shame About Ray. Her output has stayed restless and varied ever since. She released a collaboration with Paul Westerberg under the name the I Don't Cares, put out original material like the 2019 album Weird, and indulged her record collector side with cover albums dedicated to Olivia Newton John, The Police, and ELO. She has also recorded as one half of Minor Alps alongside Matthew Caws of Nada Surf, showing she works just as well in a partnership as she does fronting her own projects.
