Julianna Barwick builds her music almost entirely from her own voice, looping and layering vocals into dense, choral soundscapes that feel more like sacred spaces than songs. Growing up singing in church choirs in Louisiana clearly left a mark, and she has carried that reverence into her ambient compositions ever since. Her debut full length, The Magic Place, was recorded on a soundproof rehearsal stage because it had a piano, and its title comes from a childhood tree on her family's farm, one big enough to crawl inside. Her album Nepenthe drew on grief and ancient Greek mythology, featuring the string ensemble Amiina and a choir of teenage girls, while Will included a music video shot at the iconic Philip Johnson Glass House. In 2020 she released Healing Is a Miracle, and more recently she put out a collaborative album, Tragic Magic, with harpist Mary Lattimore.
