About

Also known as: K D Lang, K. D Lang, K. D. Lang, Kathryn Dawn Lang, Kd Lang, k.d.Lang

Few artists have straddled country and pop with as much ease as k.d. lang. The Edmonton born mezzo soprano built her early reputation on a wild, self styled "cowboy punk" persona, sewing plastic cowboys and Indians onto her clothes and fronting a Patsy Cline tribute band called the Reclines. Her 1989 duet with Roy Orbison on "Crying" won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Collaboration and kicked her career into a higher gear, while her solo breakthrough "Constant Craving" became the song most people associate with her name. Lang has collected eight Juno Awards and multiple Grammys along the way, and her voice has shown up on film soundtracks, Cole Porter tribute albums, and AIDS benefit compilations. She performed Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, a moment that cemented her status as one of Canada's most quietly iconic performers. Outside music, she has been a committed advocate for animal rights, LGBTQ rights, and Tibetan human rights.
