Few Belgian pop acts made as much noise in Europe as Kate Ryan did in the early 2000s. Born Katrien Verbeeck in Tessenderlo, she built her reputation on infectious dance pop, with a particular knack for reimagining French language classics. Her 2002 cover of Mylène Farmer's "Désenchantée" became a cross European hit, and follow up covers of artists like Desireless and France Gall kept that momentum going. She signed to EMI Belgium and her debut album Different went gold and platinum in several territories, shifting over 250,000 copies across Europe. Ryan represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 in Athens with "Je t'adore", and in 2008 picked up a World Music Award for best selling Benelux artist. Her record label puts her total career sales at around 3.5 million records. She has kept busy into more recent years through collaborations with names like Dutch DJ Sam Feldt and producer Oliver Heldens, who reworked "Désenchantée" in 2023 for a new club audience.
