About

Belgian soprano Katrien Baerts has built her reputation largely on contemporary and modern classical repertoire, making her one of the more adventurous voices in that space. She has performed at the Salzburger Festspiele, the Holland Festival, and the Barbican in London, where her debut with music by Harrison Birtwistle conducted by Oliver Knussen drew strong notices. Her work with conductor Reinbert de Leeuw produced some particularly striking results, covering pieces by Kurtág, Ligeti, Berg, and Zemlinsky, as well as the title role in Robert Zuidam's Suster Bertken at the Concertgebouw. Her opera credits are equally wide ranging, from Mozart and Bellini to the world premiere of Kris Defoort's House of the Sleeping Beauties in Tokyo. She also performed in Aus Licht, a mass production based on Stockhausen's work directed by Pierre Audi, where she made her conducting debut at the Holland Festival. She has sung alongside orchestras including the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and the BBC Philharmonic.
