About
Kayo Dot grew out of the ashes of Maudlin of the Well, taking that band's progressive metal foundations and pushing them somewhere far more adventurous. Led by Toby Driver, the Boston group debuted in 2003 with Choirs of the Eye on John Zorn's Tzadik label, a through composed record deliberately stripped of riffs and repeating parts, which quickly became a cult favourite in underground metal circles. Their follow up, Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue, earned a 4.5 out of 5 from Sputnikmusic and a solid 7.7 from Pitchfork, cementing their reputation in the indie metal world. Over the years the lineup has shifted almost constantly, with Driver as the sole original member holding it all together. The band's sound has moved just as restlessly, drawing on guitar, violin, saxophone, vibraphone, synthesizers, clarinets and flutes across a catalogue that spans post metal, drone, art rock and avant garde territory. They have released eleven studio albums across labels including Hydra Head, The Flenser and Prophecy Productions, never staying in one sonic place long enough to get comfortable.
