Few bands defined the disco era quite like KC and the Sunshine Band. Formed in 1973 in Hialeah, Florida, the group racked up five number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, four of them in the 1970s and, remarkably, the first chart topper of the 1980s with "Please Don't Go". Fronted by Harry Wayne Casey, whose surname gave the band its famous "KC", they built an unstoppable run of floor fillers: "Get Down Tonight", "That's the Way (I Like It)", "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty", "I'm Your Boogie Man", and "Boogie Shoes" among them. When disco fell out of fashion in the early 1980s, the band shifted gears and eventually landed a surprise UK smash with "Give It Up" in 1982, which later crept into the US Top 40. A disco revival in 1991 pulled Casey back out of retirement, and the band has been a fixture of nostalgia circuits and compilation shelves ever since. They earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002, and a musical built around their catalog premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2024.
