Few rappers have had a run quite like Kendrick Lamar's. The Compton rapper operates across a sprawling sonic range, from jazz soaked west coast introspection to hard hitting trap and R&B, and his sixth studio album GNX showed no signs of slowing down. The third single from that record, "Luther", made with SZA and built around a sample of Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn's 1982 cover of "If This World Were Mine", became a genuine cultural moment. A tender love ballad sitting in sharp contrast to GNX's more boastful tracks, it pairs Lamar and SZA's vocal harmonies over 808 drums and orchestral swells. "Luther" spent 13 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the second longest running hip hop number one in the chart's history, behind only Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road". The duo debuted the song live at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show, and it went on to win Record of the Year and Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 68th Grammy Awards.
