Kerli Kõiv, who records simply as Kerli, is the Estonian artist whose debut single "Walking on Air" set a then record on iTunes by racking up 550,000 downloads as Single of the Week. Her debut album Love Is Dead landed on the Billboard 200 in 2008, mixing alternative rock with a distinctly gothic, otherworldly aesthetic. Around 2010 she pivoted toward electronic and dance sounds, and the singles "Army of Love" and "Zero Gravity" both hit the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Behind the scenes, Kerli has co written songs that ended up in other people's hands in a big way: Demi Lovato covered her "Skyscraper" and Tarja Turunen took on "I Feel Immortal", both originally written for Kerli's EP Utopia. She contributed "Tea Party" to the Alice in Wonderland companion album Almost Alice, and her track "I Feel Immortal" appeared on Frankenweenie Unleashed. After leaving Island Records in 2013, she signed with Ultra Music and eventually released her second studio album Shadow Works in 2019.
