Khruangbin, the name meaning 'airplane' in Thai, says a lot about where this Houston trio is coming from. Laura Lee Ochoa on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald 'DJ' Johnson on drums weave together Thai funk, Iranian pop, dub, Middle Eastern sounds, and American soul into something that genuinely doesn't sound like anyone else. The black wigs Ochoa and Speer wear on stage have become as much a part of the band's identity as the grooves themselves. Their 2015 debut The Universe Smiles Upon You drew heavily from 1960s Thai luk thung music, while 2018's Con Todo el Mundo pulled from Middle Eastern and Spanish influences. The title came from Ochoa's grandfather, who would only accept one answer to 'How do you love me?': with all the world. Third album Mordechai followed in 2020, and the band also teamed up with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré for a full collaborative record. In 2024 they earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
