About
King Stingray call their sound 'Yolŋu surf rock', and it's a pretty accurate tag. The band blends indie rock and surf pop with lyrics split between English and Yolŋu Matha, drawing on the deep musical roots of northeast Arnhem Land. Founding members Roy Kellaway and Dimathaya Burarrwanga grew up on the same street in Yirrkala, and their connections run deep: Kellaway's father and former vocalist Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu's uncle were both founding members of Yothu Yindi, while Burarrwanga is the grandson of Warumpi Band frontman George Burarrwanga. Their 2022 self titled debut got serious attention, landing them on the cover of NME Australia and placing two songs in the triple j Hottest 100. They swept three AIR Awards in 2023, including Independent Album of the Year. Their second album, For the Dreams, followed in late 2024, with Burarrwanga stepping up as co frontman, and the band also contributed an original song to the Bluey album Rug Island. A US tour supporting King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard gave them a wider audience, and new vocalist Ngalakan Wanambi joined the lineup in 2025.
