About
Koen Ruijs plays instrumental music on his own, armed with a resonator guitar and a slide. Blues, folk and Americana all blend together in what he does, and it's built on a stripped back setup: one guitarist, one resonator, and that singing, vocal quality a slide can give. He's also known for his work with Mexican Surf. His sound draws on the swampy feel of Delta blues, the raw edge of pre war blues, and the more modern approach of players like Ben Harper and Ry Cooder. There are no lyrics, but the pieces are meant to paint pictures. For Koen, the resonator conjures scenes straight out of a Tarantino film: an empty road, a dusty motel, a horizon that never ends. He leaves plenty of room for the listener to fill in the rest. His EP Wrong End of the Telescope collects instrumental compositions for resonator and slide.
