The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is one of Amsterdam's most storied ensembles, rooted in the classical tradition and equally at home with Baroque repertoire and the sweeping emotional landscapes of Romanticism. Their programmes regularly dig into the full range of Western orchestral music, from the intricate counterpoint of Bach and Handel to the volcanic drama of Berlioz and the lyrical warmth of Schumann. Klaus Mäkelä has been named the orchestra's future chief conductor, and their collaborations already signal a particular affinity for early Romantic works. Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, a hallucination driven narrative of obsessive love that has captivated audiences for two centuries, sits comfortably in their repertoire alongside Schumann's buoyant First Symphony, nicknamed Frühling. Guest conductors like Jan Willem de Vriend bring a specialist's passion to Baroque and pre Classical programmes, leading the orchestra through composers as varied as Jean Féry Rebel, C.P.E. Bach, and Handel.
