Few MCs have left fingerprints on hip hop quite like Kool G Rap. The Queens native built his reputation in the late 1980s as one half of Kool G Rap & DJ Polo and as a member of the legendary Juice Crew, and his mafioso rap style and multisyllabic rhyme schemes essentially wrote the rulebook that Nas, the Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z and Eminem all studied. Music journalist Peter Shapiro puts it plainly: he created the blueprint for Nas, Biggie, and everyone who followed in their path. The duo's first three albums, Road to the Riches, Wanted: Dead or Alive and Live and Let Die, are considered genuine classics of the era. Going solo in 1995 with 4, 5, 6, featuring Nas and production from Buckwild, he hit No. 24 on the Billboard 200, his commercial peak. Later records like The Giancana Story and Half a Klip kept the lyricism sharp, with the latter featuring DJ Premier and Marley Marl on production duties. In 2018 he linked up with Rochester rapper 38 Spesh for the collaborative album Son of G Rap.
