Formed in Paris in 2012, L'Impératrice built their sound around a lush blend of nu disco and pop, with keyboardist Charles de Boisseguin at the core of the songwriting. The group started out as an instrumental act before vocalist Flore Benguigui joined in 2015, a move that pushed them onto the international radar via their EP Odyssée. One quirky footnote: a fan accidentally played that EP at the wrong speed, which the band loved so much they rereleased it as the slower L'Empereur. Their three studio albums, Matahari, Tako Tsubo, and Pulsar, cemented their reputation for hooky, groove forward French pop. They played Coachella twice, in 2022 and 2024. After Pulsar dropped, Benguigui announced her departure under difficult circumstances, and French artist Louve stepped in as the new lead vocalist. The band keeps evolving, and with a fresh voice up front, L'Impératrice clearly has no interest in slowing down.
