Lali Puna takes its name from a piece of wordplay: Lali is a nickname for Valerie, and Puna is a childish spelling of Busan, the Korean city where lead singer and songwriter Valerie Trebeljahr was born. That personal geography shows up in the music too, with Portuguese lyrics surfacing across their catalog thanks to Trebeljahr's decade living in Portugal. The band grew into a full group when Markus Acher of The Notwist joined alongside drummer Christoph Brandner and keyboardist Florian Zimmer, and they built a catalog of carefully crafted downtempo electropop across albums like Scary World Theory, Faking the Books, and Our Inventions. Over the years the lineup shifted, with Zimmer departing in 2002 and Acher leaving before the 2017 album Two Windows, leaving Trebeljahr as the creative core. Their discography spans five studio albums, collaborations with acts like Bomb the Bass, and remixes for artists including Dntel. The single Being Water appeared in 2019, showing the project is still very much alive.
