About

Lamp have been quietly building one of the most distinctive catalogs in Japanese indie pop since their debut in 2003, blending bossa nova, jazz, soul, and funk into something that resists easy categorization. The Tokyo trio of guitarist Taiyo Someya, vocalist and multi instrumentalist Yusuke Nagai, and vocalist Kaori Sakakibara draw from Brazilian music, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Simon and Garfunkel, and the results tend to feel timeless rather than genre locked. Their early albums circulated mostly across East Asia until a TikTok wave around their song "Yume Utsutsu" brought them a whole new audience in the West. By 2023 they dropped their ninth album, Dusk to Dawn, a 20 track record that had been in development since 2019 and marked the first time Someya took a formal producer credit. The following year the band made their North American debut on tour, also appearing as supporting acts for Mitski. Their own label, Botanical House, has given them full control over their output since 2014, which probably explains why the music sounds exactly like them and nothing else.
