Latto turned down a record deal at seventeen after winning Jermaine Dupri's rap competition show, choosing to grind as an independent artist instead. That gamble paid off when "Bitch from da Souf" turned her into a genuine buzz act in 2019, eventually landing her a deal with RCA Records and a debut album, Queen of da Souf, with the Gucci Mane assisted "Muwop" going platinum along the way. The real turning point came with "Big Energy" in 2021, a track that climbed to number three on the Billboard Hot 100, went triple platinum, and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist at the 65th ceremony. Her second album 777 followed, and then a feature on Jung Kook's "Seven" in 2023 gave her her first number one on both the Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. Her third album Sugar Honey Iced Tea arrived in 2024, with the Cardi B remix of "Put It on da Floor Again" leading the way.
